Academic Calendar

The academic year for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences starts at the beginning of the fall term and continues through the end of the summer term. While the specific semester dates may vary slightly from year to year, academic appointments begin on September 1 for the fall term, January 1 for the spring term, and June 1 for the summer.

NOTE: The deadline for taking a fall or spring half-semester course Pass/Fail or for R credit is the Friday of the fourth week of the course. A half-semester course must be dropped within the first two weeks of the course.

AUGUST

21: Wednesday. GSAS Orientation for entering students in Arts and Sciences graduate programs.
30: Friday. Last day for doctoral candidates to distribute in the Summer 2024 term

SEPTEMBER

1: Sunday. Deadline for students to apply for the MA degree (both freestanding and en-route) to be awarded in October.
2: Monday. Labor Day. University holiday.
3: Tuesday. First day of classes.
3-6, 9-13: Tuesday–Friday, Monday–Friday. Late registration and change of program.
13: Friday. End of change of program period. Fall courses officially dropped by this date do not incur tuition charges.
30: Monday. Last day to enroll in, or request a waiver of, the Student Medical Insurance Plan.

OCTOBER

1: Tuesday. Last day for doctoral students to submit the Application for Childcare Subsidy.
3: Thursday. Last day for the department to submit the MPhil application for October degree conferral.
8: Tuesday. Last day to drop full-term fall courses. Courses dropped by this deadline are charged at full tuition but do not appear on a student's transcript.
10: Thursday. Last day for the doctoral candidate to deposit the dissertation for October degree conferral.
16: Wednesday. October degrees conferred.
17: Thursday. Midterm date.

NOVEMBER

1

Friday. Deadline for students to apply for the MA degree (both freestanding and en-route) to be awarded in February.

Monday. Academic holiday. University offices are open, but classes are not in session.

Tuesday. Election Day. University holiday.

Thursday

Last day to exercise Pass/Fail option for a fall course.
Last day to file to take a full-term fall course for R credit.

Friday. Last day for students returning in spring 2025 to submit the Return from a Leave of Absence form.

Last day to withdraw or take a leave of absence effective in the fall 2024 semester.

Monday. Deadline for students with grades of IN or CP from the spring 2024 or summer 2024 terms to submit outstanding work. Departments and instructors may set an earlier deadline, which supersedes the GSAS deadline.

JANUARY

1: Wednesday. Deadline for students to apply for the MA degree (both freestanding and en-route) to be awarded in May.
6-9, 13-17: Wednesday–Friday, Monday–Friday. Registration for the spring 2025 term.
16: Thursday. Last day for doctoral candidates to distribute in the fall 2024 semester.
20: Monday. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. University holiday.
21: Tuesday. First day of spring classes.
21-24, 27-31: Tuesday–Friday, Monday–Friday. Late registration and change of program. Students who register during these dates must pay a late registration fee.
30: Thursday. Last day for the department to submit the MPhil application for February degree conferral.
31: Friday. End of change of program period. Spring courses officially dropped by this date do not incur tuition charges.

FEBRUARY

6: Thursday. Last day for the doctoral candidate to deposit the dissertation for February degree conferral.
12: Wednesday. February degrees conferred.
15: Saturday. Last day to enroll in, or request a waiver of, the Student Medical Insurance Plan (for new students or students returning from a leave of absence in spring 2025 only).
25: Tuesday. Last day to drop spring courses. Courses dropped by this deadline are charged at full tuition but do not appear on a student's transcript.

MARCH

Saturday. Last day for doctoral students who became parents since December 15 to submit the Application for Childcare Subsidy.
